Airbus to Invest in Humanoid Robots
HONG KONG—Airbus is the latest manufacturer to invest in humanoid robots. According to Reuters, it has signed a deal with UBTech to supply machines for use in aircraft manufacturing applications.
Walker S2 is a full-size humanoid that is 5.9 inches tall and weighs 154 pounds. It features a pair of dexterous hands that can handle payloads up to 17 pounds.
The humanoid runs on Co-Agent, UBTech’s proprietary intelligent agent system that empowers the robot with closed-loop operational capabilities, including intention understanding, task planning, tool usage, and autonomous anomaly detection and handling.
Specific details, such as where Airbus will deploy the robots and the type of assembly tasks they will handle, have not been revealed yet. However, UBTech claims that the “two parties will jointly expand the application of humanoid robots in aerospace manufacturing scenarios in the future.”
The Chinese company plans to produce 5,000 humanoids this year and 10,000 machines in 2027. Its customers include automakers such as BYD, FAW-Volkswagen and Geely, in addition to electronics manufacturers like Foxconn and Texas Instruments.
